Canadian Forces Showcase Winter Operations at Winterlude

5 02 2011

The Canadian Forces (CF) will showcase various aspects of winter operations and survival during Winterlude at Jacques Cartier Park in Ottawa, Canada this weekend.

An exciting winter obstacle course will thrill and test children’s coordination and physical fitness, if they accept the challenge. Returning this year by popular demand is the 3rd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (3 CRPG) from Northern Ontario. Canadians will have the opportunity to speak to Rangers about living in Canada’s north and get winter survival tips. Joining sailors and soldiers again this year, and ready to entertain, will be the Army’s mascot “Juno” the polar bear.

Soldiers from 33 Canadian Brigade Group and sailors from Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Carleton based in Ottawa, Ont., will be on hand to help visitors try out military equipment and winter clothing. “Visitors will have the opportunity to try on and warm up in our military arctic parkas or try on a rucksack to see how much it weighs,” said Brigadier-General Fred Lewis, Commander of Joint Task Force (Central) and Land Force Central Area. “It’s all a part of showcasing to Canadians who we are, what we do and some of the equipment we use.”

Every February, Canada’s capital region is host to Winterlude, Canada’s winter celebration. A great way to take in the best of our Canadian winter, Winterlude is a large festival of outdoor activities including public skating on the world’s largest skating rink, snow and ice sculpture competitions, musical concerts, children’s play areas, and numerous other events.
